Growing the Future of Texas Trees

At Perez Elementary School in Austin, Texas, Life Time Team Members from Austin North partnered with TreeFolks for a hands-on tree care event to help ensure the survival of 50 young trees planted in 2022.

While tree planting gets much of the spotlight, caring for maturing trees is just as critical. Volunteers spent the day mulching, weeding, and watering—essential practices that support healthy growth and build a more resilient urban canopy for future generations.

I’m deeply grateful to work for a company that leads with purpose—investing in healthier communities, a healthier planet, and meaningful change.
— Tim Shannon, Personal Training Leader at Life Time Austin North

In addition to volunteering, Life Time Foundation presented a $2,500 grant to TreeFolks to further support their local environmental efforts.

This grant supports TreeFolks' ongoing mission not only to plant trees but to ensure their survival. Their team revisits planting sites up to three years after the initial effort, reinforcing growth and correcting common issues.

Some fun facts the team learned onsite:

  • The #1 cause of premature tree loss? Weed whackers!

  • Tree trunks can’t absorb nutrients, so it is important to ensure the root collar is not planted too low into the dirt.

  • Mulch provides insulation, moisture retention, and nutrients—when applied properly.

  • Mulch needs to be placed around the tree trunk with about 2-3 inches of space from the trunk. Mulch should not be "volcanoed" up against the trunk.

I’m truly grateful for the stage Life Time gives us to make a real difference — in people’s lives, in our communities, and in the world. It’s a chance to build something better for future generations, and I’m proud to be part of that mission.
— Paola Tennyson, Senior Lead General at Life Time Austin North

This event not only strengthened Austin’s tree canopy but also deepened connections—between teammates, their community, and the environment we all share.
